Mappas is a typical Kerala dish, with thick and creamy coconut milk. The best combination is appam and beef mappas. Beef recipes are always inviting for us, especially mappas. As my father in law said beef mappas is a must to make curry in the “The” family… He stays with us, so while I was planning what all to be added in the Christmas dinner menu I just asked him.

Event though, I have tagged it as a breakfast recipe, with appam.  It goes well with rice or chapati or even Arabic Kuboos. It can be called as a celebration dish because it is made especially on Easter or Christmas mornings or even in marriage receptions (sadhya).

Beef Mappas Recipe


  • 500 grams Beef Cubed
  • 2 tsp. Ginger Chopped
  • 2 tsp Garlic Chopped
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 4 Green Chillies Slit
  • 1 tbsp. Coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Chilli Powder
  • ½ tsp. Pepper Powder
  • ½ tsp. Garam Masala Powder
  • Few Curry leaves
  • Salt as per taste
  • 3 tbsp. oil(Coconut oil/any)
  • 6 Cloves
  • 4 Cardamom
  • ¼ tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1 Cinnamon
  • 1 Shallots Sliced
  • Potato – 2 small, cubed
  • 1 cup Thin Coconut Milk
  • ½ cup Thick coconut milk


  1. Heat 2 tbsp. oil in pressure-cook, add sliced onion, ginger, garlic and green chilies. Saute until onion starts to change color.
  2. Add Coriander powder, Chilli Powder, Pepper Powder, Garam Masala Powder and Turmeric Powder. Saute until their raw smell is gone. Add little water so that masala does not get burned.
  3. Add beef to this, add salt as required (1 tsp. now may be ok) and cook till beef is well done.
  4. Once beef is cooked add potatoes and thin coconut milk and cook until potatoes are cooked and gravy thickens. Adjust salt now
  5. Add the thick milk, turn off the heat when it starts to simmer.
  6. Heat oil in a pan add whole masala and fry.
  7. Add shallots and curry leaves fry till shallots are golden brown.
  8. Pour this over the mappas and serve it with appam/bread/rice etc.
